Barbados enjoys a rich and varied culture that is enhanced by its status as one of the most popular island destinations in the Caribbean region. Formerly a British colony, the island's official language remains English and the architecture and planning of the island echoes the styles seen in the United Kingdom. Bridgetown, Holetown, Speightstown and Oistins make up the larger urban areas on Barbados, with the majority of the attractions being either churches (St John's Parish Church, Sharon Moravian Church) or natural areas (Folkestone Marine Park, Barbados Wildlife Reserve, Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary).
Barbados is connected to local and international destinations by boat and plane. Sir Grantley Adams International Airport, a few kilometres east of Bridgetown, is the major airport of the region with flights from the United States, the UK and Canada common. Although there are not any regular ferry connections to the other Caribbean islands, Barbados is a regular stop on the cruise-ship route (Bridgetown being the popular harbour), and private vessels can also dock around the island.
Car hire is recommended for exploring Barbados as the bus system is often over-crowded. First Choice Rentals, Venture Car Rentals and Courtesy Car Rentals are amongst the local businesses that operate in Barbados - international companies are rare. It's important that you ensure your hire car has air conditioning as Barbados - located so close to the Equator - often has days that hit over 30°C. If you are travelling to Barbados in the peak season also make sure you book your car hire well ahead of time.
